How Google Ads actually works for contractors

Why most contractor ad accounts burn money, and the three settings that decide whether your Google Ads bring real job leads or clicks.

Most contractors we talk to have already tried Google Ads. Someone set up a campaign, the phone rang for a few weeks, then the calls dried up or the leads turned into tire kickers. The account gets blamed, but the campaign was rarely the problem — the system around it was.

Google Ads does not create demand. It captures the demand that already exists. When someone's fence blows down or their AC dies in July, they search, they click, and they expect an answer in minutes. If your ad lands them on a slow homepage with no form and no phone number, the money is gone before it ever had a chance.

The three settings that decide everything

  • Geography. A 40-mile radius around a metro quietly includes neighborhoods you would never drive to. Tighten the radius to where your crews actually work and your cost per lead drops.
  • Conversion goal. If Google is optimizing toward clicks or page visits instead of form submissions and calls, it will happily send you cheaper traffic that never buys. The campaign needs to optimize around the real goal — a filled form or a tracked call.
  • Speed to lead. Studies keep showing the same thing: the first company to respond wins the majority of jobs. If a lead sits in an inbox overnight, the best ad campaign in the world cannot save it.

What a well-run account looks like

The accounts that work for contractors are boring on purpose. A tight radius, a small number of tightly-themed ad groups, landing pages built around one job type, and call tracking on every number. Weekly reviews kill the keywords that spend without converting and move budget to the ones that do.

If your ads are running but nobody is managing them weekly, you are not advertising — you are donating. That is the difference between Google Ads as an expense and Google Ads as a lead engine.
